NYCDEP 2026 Update: Mandatory Online Applications for Asbestos Certification

NYC DEP 2026 Updates for Asbestos Control Program and Certifications

Starting January 26, 2026, the NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is officially retiring the "snail mail" era for asbestos professional certifications. The Asbestos Control Program’s Training and Certification Unit will no longer accept paper applications sent via mail.

This change is a major shift in how industry professionals must manage their credentials. Whether you are applying for the first time or renewing a long-standing license, the process is now 100% digital.

What Asbestos Applications Are Affected?

This mandate applies across the board. The following certifications must now be managed exclusively through the online portal:

  • Asbestos Handler

  • Restricted Handler

  • Handler-Supervisor

  • Asbestos Investigator

The DEP has transitioned all materials to a dedicated web interface designed to streamline the approval process. Professionals are encouraged to bookmark the new portal immediately to avoid delays in their certification status.

Any technical questions or specific concerns regarding individual applications can be directed to the Training and Certification Unit via email at kramsawak@dep.nyc.gov.

Why the Switch Matters

The move to an online-only system is intended to reduce processing times and provide professionals with better tracking of their application status. However, digital systems are often less forgiving of errors than paper forms.

Pro-Tip for Applicants: Ensure all your training certificates are scanned in high resolution and your fee payments are ready for electronic processing before you start your session in the portal.

Related Regulatory Updates

  • Stay Informed: As New York continues to digitize its environmental safety oversight, staying ahead of these portal changes is vital for your business.
